Terraform Landing Zone Deployment Accelerates Cloud Migration

Executive Summary

Cloud data-center servers representing a Terraform landing zone deployment

A multinational enterprise software provider needed to migrate a customer’s AIX-based warehouse management system to Google Cloud by starting with a fully provisioned, secure landing zone. Partnering with Pellera, the team used HashiCorp Terraform to automate the entire build as infrastructure-as-code, delivering faster migration timelines, repeatable version-controlled deployments, and stronger disaster-recovery readiness.

The Challenge

A multinational enterprise software provider needed to migrate a customer’s warehouse management system running on IBM AIX into Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Pellera was selected for its deep IBM Power expertise and its ability to integrate Power workloads directly with GCP compute.

Before the larger migration could begin, the provider needed a fully provisioned landing zone — networking, identity and access management (IAM) policies, a hardened jump host, and a proxy host — plus a plan to deploy IBM Storage Protect on Google Compute Engine (GCE) for backup and recovery. Manual provisioning would have slowed the timeline and increased the risk of drift and misconfiguration.

The Approach

Pellera deployed HashiCorp Terraform as the infrastructure-as-code (IaC)foundation, authoring modules aligned to the client’s GCP requirements and maintaining version control through GitLab for traceability, collaboration, and rollback assurance.

The Solution

The automated deployment turned a manual, error-prone build into a repeatable, auditable one:

01

Network Architecture

Automated network architecture and segmentation across the landing zone.

02

IAM & Least-Privilege

Codified IAM roles and least-privilege access policies.

03

Hardened Jump & Proxy Hosts

Automated the hardening and deployment of the jump host and proxy host.

04

Backup-Ready Configuration

Provisioned the configurations required to support IBM Storage Protect on GCE.

The Results

With Terraform as the engine behind the landing zone, the provider accelerated its AIX migration path:

Faster migration timelines

Automated provisioning shortened the time to stand up critical GCE infrastructure.

Repeatable, versioned builds

Infrastructure became reproducible and fully tracked in GitLab.

Stronger governance

Auditable IaC workflows improved oversight and control.

Quicker recovery

Improved reliability and faster restoration during disaster-recovery exercises.
